Christmas Markets and Presepi in Naples

‘Tis the season, but In Naples, it’s Christmas year round. The bond between the tradition of the Nativity scene and the city of Naples is so exclusive that the term “Neapolitan Nativity” now indicates a thing in itself. Neapolitan crèche nativity scenes locally called presepi feature mostly classic figures, the Holy Family, the magi, shepherds and 19th century villagers engaged in daily life, but also the often caricature representation of famous people from the past and the present. It’s therefore easy to find a unique combination of sacred and mundane in the figures that populate the Neapolitan Presepi.
